Cataract surgery: How should you prepare before undergoing it?

Cataract-surgery-How-should-you-prepare-before-undergoing-it

Cataract surgery is the removal of the natural lens of the eye as it becomes cloudy and the replacement of it with an artificial lens. It is a very common and safe surgery to undergo and certain easy things are needed to be done to prepare for the surgery.

1-2 weeks before the surgery!

Stop wearing contact lenses

You should stop wearing contact lenses at least 2 weeks before giving measurements for your eye lenses as it distorts the shape of the cornea thereby, affecting the measurement of the lenses taken by the doctor. Also, stop wearing it completely till you recover from the surgery.

Discuss your medication and health issues with your doctor

Let your doctor know the medications you are on and if you have health conditions such as diabetes or hypertension, let your doctor know about it. Knowing all of this your doctor could suggest to stop taking certain medications temporarily or change the dosage of some of your medications and also assess you if you are fit for the surgery.

Use eye drops as recommended

Your doctor could prescribe eye drops to keep your eyes moist and antibiotic eye drops to prevent any eye infection before surgery

Follow up with your doctor a few days before the surgery

Doing a follow-up is necessary to get your eye lenses measured accurately one more time before the surgery and for getting your eye health and power checked one more time for precision.

The night before the surgery!

When you are declared fit for the surgery, the night before the surgery you are advised not to eat or drink past midnight and get proper rest before the surgery with your eyes well-rested.

The day of the surgery!

During the day of the surgery, do not eat or drink 12 hours before the surgery and abstain from any alcoholic beverage 24 hours before the cataract surgery.

Dress comfortably in loose clothing.

Do not wear makeup, cosmetics, skincare products, or any jewelry.

Have someone to accompany you over who could take you back home after the surgery.

Have dark sunglasses to wear after the surgery that would protect your eyes from bright light.

Take a few days off to give your eyes proper rest and for a smooth recovery.
